The German artist Ulrike Bolenz, lives and works in Brussels, is showing the feminine positively without revealing the mystery of the ultimately unknowable. Through chemically prepared materials-and also gelatine-she makes transparent surfaces that tend to relate to sculpture and installation art. She starts from photos taken from video stills to work out the most suitable arrangement. Force and freedom, power and the deprivation of it, and the abuse in between: she explores this topos by depicting men's bodies which express its ambiguity. In sharp contrast to this are her female nudes. No display of power here, but subduedness. The woman transplants her psyche, her soul, onto her skin. In addition to becoming visible, this inner world therefore also becomes punishable. This meaning of intimacy becomes even more fragile because the idea of transitoriness is also evoked. Bolenz does not abuse the nude to make the erotic explicit. | |
