KALVIS ZUTERS (by Davis Simanis)
I have often noticed how the unintentional pattern and texture of the damp brick walls with the peeling moulding, stains of oil paint and countless dim corners carry a certain resemblance to his own compositions: seen and experienced, arranged, not invented. Such a simple lack of chaos, like the invariable number of steps in the set-up of an old house. While absence of errors is an obvious etalon of quality in the construction business, the Fine Arts have been striving to convince everyone for decades that making mistakes is even commendable. It is all very well to find delight in the first-time lightness of a blunder and the added value of fortuity in every work of art, and yet one cannot help but feel slightly suspicious that it may be a simple case of replacing the word “folly” with the so much more sublime “the subconscious”. And when that happens, it is such a pleasure to know someone who is not hiding behind all this psycho crap – exaggerated evidence of his/her own insanity or creative Jesuitism…
